Some great suggestions! Can I nominate another UK charity for text donations?
You can donate your remaining pay-as-you-go balance to Oxfam by text in a similar way.

Text OXFM89 £x to 70070, where x is the amount you want to give (can be £1, £2, £3, £4, £5 or £10)

Other amounts can be split into separate texts, so to donate £6 of leftover credit first text a £5 donation followed by a £1 text donation. This campaign is through JustGiving so the text number and code should be valid permanently.

Details on this campaign here:

Hope that helps!

Brilliant! What about the credit on GiffGaff for those leaving? My dad's staying with GiffGaff and I'd like to give my remaining credit and bonus to him when I go. Is there a way to do that?

@targaid If you port your number out using a pac all credit, payback and bonus are forfeited instantly.

Credit is not transferable between members.

You can either use up the credit yourself and/or donate to the many charities using a shortcode sms number.

I noticed giffgaff are sponsoring the ch4 special 'Celebrity Hunted' which in turn is promoting the Stand up to Cancer Charity where you can text either 'Ten' £10 or 'Twenty' £20 to 70404 and your credit balance will reduce by the amount chosen. Apparently 100% of your donation is used for Cancer research without aďmin deduction.

@hcpt Downside to using 'justgiving' is that they rake in a commission on every pound donated through them. Far better to donate direct to a Charity sms shortcode not associated with justgiving.

You're right about debit card donations through Justgiving - they take a small percentage for admin. However with the text donations they don't take any commission - "Every penny of your donation (including Gift Aid) goes to your charity" - https://help.justgiving.com/hc/en-us/articles/200670441

The JustTextGiving system is run separately, by Vodafone, as a partnership between themselves and JustGiving for text donations through the 70070 text number 100% goes to the charity - https://www.justgiving.com/en/justtextgiving

Valid point though. There are always admin overheads and other expenses and costs for charities for transferring/transporting the inputs of a charity's work (money, goods, labour, wages, time spent by volunteers etc.) to the final beneficiaries.
